Water Line Replacement

Water Line Replacement and Installation Services

While your water line is usually designed to last a long time, unforeseen circumstances can cause damage to your water line and affect your entire home. Your water line is responsible for transporting fresh, clean water to your homes. It is connected to the city’s main, kept separate from your sewer line to prevent contamination.

With age, water lines can become more susceptible to the effects of freezing and thawing, ground movement, tree root intrusion, water pressure, and mineral buildup.. When water line is damaged, it can cause anything from discolored water to reduced water pressure. At first, these may not be alarming signs, but they could quickly lead to the need for emergency replacement. Below are some indications that your water line needs to be repaired or replaced:

  • Lawn or yard puddles
  • Low water pressure
  • Water discoloration
  • Sudden increase of your water bill

Should You Replace or Repair Your Water Line?

Homeowners may be faced with this question when their water service line requires repair work. A typical homeowner will not know whether doing a partial repair is a possibility, or if the entire water line should be replaced. There are some guidelines you can follow to determine whether you should repair or replace your water line.

  1. What’s the age of your main water line? The useful life of a typical water service line is just over 50 years. If your water line has issues and is over 50 years old then it most likely needs to be replaced.
  2. Was the water line ever repaired before? Knowing if your water line has been worked on in the past is important. If an older water line is repaired it is more likely to break again.
  3. What is the existing material made of? Depending on the type of material your water line is made of, that’ll help your plumber determine the best course of action. Some materials can’t be repaired. Your plumber should tell you what material the water line is made of and what options you have based on that knowledge.
  4. What’s the price differential between repairing or replacing your water line? A general rule of thumb is that if a repair costs 50% – or more – of the cost of a replacement, then you should consider doing the replacement.

What Happens If Your Water Line Breaks?

A water main may develop holes or cracks over time, usually as a result of external corrosion from the soil or frost. Since water pipes are under pressure, a break in the water main will cause water to be forced out of the pipe and eventually to the surface level, whether that be the street, your front lawn, or the basement of your home. The disruption could also lead to contaminated water in the home. You will need to stop using appliances or drinking water when this occurs. There is usually a house shutoff valve that will turn off the flow of water through the main line in an emergency such as this. If your public utility doesn’t shut off the water flow first, you can locate the homeowner shut-off valve (next to your water meter) and turn the water flow off yourself. This is done with a water meter key. Once the water is shut off to your home, you should call a plumber to come out and look at the problem.

Client Reviews

“Justin and Zach represent this company well. They were not only skilled at their trade, but they were professional, courteous, and CLEAN! That means a lot to me as a customer. Both of the installers were personable and they took their time to explain the system to us after the installation. I felt very comfortable with them being in my home, and even left for awhile during the install. This is a team that I would highly recommend. Also, Dave Coleman, the salesperson, was knowledgeable and understanding of our needs. I appreciate his time and patience with us as we asked a ton of questions. He gave us all of our options and my husband and I both felt that we could trust his expertise, and that he gave us the fairest price he could. Thank you to everyone at T&G for an outstanding experience with getting a new furnace and air conditioning system. You are appreciated!” – Adam A.
